Is the “transfer case” considered part of an automotive transmission? Why or why not?

The transfer case is definitely part of the drivetrain but it’s not part of the transmission. Essentially a transfer case attaches to the back of the transmission and splits the power to the front and back of the car. The transmission, on the other hand, contains the different gears that your car shifts into as you speed up. Some transfer cases are a lot like transmissions because they let you shift into low, high and 4wd modes, but they are not technically part of the transmission. If you have a new car warranty still, it should be covered, but if you have a shady extended warranty, they may only cover the transmission instead of the whole drivetrain of the car.
