The election of local councillors of both the BNP and Respect are a symptom of an underlying disaffection with the existing political system. If the current economic malaise continues and becomes a full blown economic slump then politically the extremes of both Left and Right will benefit as they have in the past. World wide I expect a turn to the left in the next couple of decades as the economic position of the middle classes is undermined by globalisation and they become, in relative terms, “proletarianised”. As for the next election in the UK – unless New Labour can pull several magic rabbits out of a cloth cap, Campbell looks set for a walkover victory.
