Is the work tedious?
The dispensing opticians I worked with, as an optometrist, all felt they has a more varied job than mine, but they had different hassles with the public, mostly over costs and unreasonable expectations. (glasses costing little, delivered yesterday, that weighed nothing yet were tougher than armour-plate..?) On a good day it’s interacting with varied people, and helping them with their problems: improving their comfort and vision and, occasionally, making a major difference to their health. On a bad day it’s like working on a production line: asking the same questions again and again, of unresponsive and unhelpful people (that you’re not actually allowed to strangle…) From a face lighting up on the world suddenly being clearer, to a teenager’s black mood and neanderthal grunts. You have to be comfortable with repetitive procedure, but flexible and alert enough to spot the unusual. Slipping into pure “automatic mode” isn’t good enough.
