Is There a Consensus in the Medical Research Community on Whether Dental Amalgam Causes Health Problems?
One point that the World Health Organization and the Department of Health and Human Services of the Centers for Disease Control agree upon, is that mercury vapors are emitted from dental amalgam, commonly known as silver filling. Studies on the question of whether mercury exposure from dental amalgam vapor causes health problems yield inconsistent results. Inadequacies in study size, measures used, reproducibility of results and the subjective nature of some of the low level effects have precluded a consensus on the safety of mercury amalgam. The Department of Health and Human Services and other summary reports on the health risks from the use of mercury amalgam generally support the need for further investigation. The Department of Health and Human Services further comments that people who are concerned that their mercury exposure may be causing adverse side effects can be tested for mercury retention in the body.
