Is there a difference between Portobello mushrooms and Portabella mushrooms?
Portobello is the name of a fashionable street in London. The Agaricus bisporus mushroom is reportedly named after the street which is home to upscale shops, restaurants, and a market. The street name is grammatically masculine. Some have cleverly used the feminine version of the name, Portabella, to refer to smaller samples of the same mushroom. The mushroom is also called a brown crimini mushroom or a table mushroom. In Northern Italy, the mushroom is called cappellone. Sources: http://www.gourmetsleuth.com/portobellosportabellas.
