Yes, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension (1984) was directed by W.D. Richter, who wrote the screenplay to Big Trouble in Little China (1986). If you watch the end of Buckaroo Banzai, the film mentions a potential sequel called "Buckaroo Banzai Against the World Crime League." Supposedly, Richter was writing this Banzai sequel and, under John Carpenter's direction, it eventually morphed into Big Trouble in Little China. Ah, but the plot thickens. In 1996, a BB fan named Ernest Cline wrote a professional screenplay of "World Crime League" which almost made it big time.
