If you only have the one laptop, you do not need a router. Here is how you make the connection, taken from the Westell manual. You can actually connect 2 computers at the same time to the Westell modem. If you have more computers to connect, then you will need a router. That will connect via the Ethernet port from the modem to the router. If it is a wireless router, you are set (once you go though the setup). If you need wire connections, run Ethernet cables from the router to each computer. If you need to connect to your laptop with the fried Ethernet port, you can get this USB-Ethernet Adapter from TigerDirect for $12.99. Plug the adapter into your laptop’s USB port and the Ethernet cable into the adapter.
