Is There an Alternative to Packaged Diving Holidays?
With many travel operators reporting a decline in the market for resort based diving packages, it’s clear that there is a growing interest amongst divers for alternatives. Logistical complications, a considerable amount of uncertainty and careful planning are challenges that face all divers looking outside the package holiday box. Yet few dive travel companies are in a position to meet these challenges. The process is all too familiar; after flicking through a glossy brochure showing colourful images of flashy resorts or liveaboard vessels, the would-be customer consults their agent who gladly books the flight, transfers, accommodation and diving package. Four months later our diver has just finished their last day of guided diving and lazes by the pool, enclosed in the compounds of their very ordinary and secluded resort, separated from the actual country they are there to visit – to think that at one time diving was considered ‘adventurous’!
