In general, yeah it is an art if you take it seriously. To get to the high levels of skill you need years. On the other hand to sharpen the average knife to really sharp, mirror polished edge you won’t need years of learning. using sharpening systems you can master that in a month or two, and freehand probably in 6 month to 12. Popular sharpening system reviews are here – http://zknives.com/knives/sharpening/sys… Although, I’d have to warn that spyderco sharpmaker while being a good sharpening system is pretty much useless w/o diamond rods, which aren’t included in the kit. Other than that, before you decide to move to whetstones, I suggest you start with the sandpaper/mousepad method. Much more novice friendly that stones and it’ll make excellent edge, plus good practice for freehand sharpening to make transition to stones if you decide so.
