Is there any difference in installation over a slab or crawlspace foundation?

If you are having tile installed on your floor, then the answer is “yes”. The subfloor for a crawlspace is made of wood and it expands and contracts significantly as the temperature and humidity change. This expansion causes cracks if the tile is installed directly onto the subfloor. To prevent this, an underlayment material such as Durrock is installed over the subfloor, thus providing the perfect material for tile adhesion. Since a slab is made of concrete, this step is not necessary. Laminate and hardwood floors can be installed directly over either type of foundation with no problems, provided a moisture barrier is laid down first.
