Is there any free software thats better than audacity?
It would help to know why Audacity is not doing what you want so we can help.. Audacity can record, layer (multi-track) and has heaps of effects. You just need to know how. The recording input is selected from a drop down list at the top right of the program. To answer a previous question of yours (the answer to which was wrong) set up multi-track recording like this: Multi-track recording setup: Version 1.2 via File menu, version 1.3 via Edit menu. Preferences / Audio I/O tab and check: “play other tracks while recording new one”. Import the first track then monitor it while recording subsequent track/s. It’s best to use headphones while doing this to prevent feedback. As for effects apart from those available with the original download you can get 90 more from this link.
