The Supreme Court of Minnesota created the Minnesota Board of Legal Certification to approve and oversee organizations who certify legal specialists. The Minnesota State Bar Association has been approved as an independent professional organization for certifying attorneys as specialists since 1988. The Board of Legal Certification requires quarterly and annual reporting of program fees and operations and audits both programs every three years.
