Is Thiamin, as an additive to bread, suitable for vegans?

Q Hi Uncle Dave, I was wondering if you could tell me whether thiamin, as an additive, is vegan or not. I can’t seem to find any info about it’s manufacture as an additive. Being one of the B group vitamins, I’m thinking maybe it’s not. Anyhow I just wanted to know if thiamin, and hence crumpets, were vegan or not 😉 A Thiamin is added to flour in Australia as synthetic thiamin mononitrate. “In January 1991, an amendment to the Australian Food Standards Code made it a legal requirement that bread-making flour contains no less than 6.4 mg/kg of thiamin.” “Mandatory thiamin fortification of bread-making flour was introduced to reduce the incidence of Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome (WKS) in Australia.” Refer: http://www.gograins.grdc.com.au/grainsnutrition/ie/7_7.
