According to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this represents the largest Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) outbreak reported since the start of outbreak surveillance in the early 1970s. The largest previous outbreak was in 1994, due to contaminated commercial ice cream, with 743 reported cases.
