Washington, DC, the capital of the USA, and Washington, the state, are two different things. Washington State (the big city in it is Seattle) is in the northwest corner of the country. Washington, DC, is in the middle of the east coast of the US. Washington, DC, isn’t in a state. It is what’s called the District of Columbia (that’s what the DC stands for). The District of Columbia is in between the US states of Maryland and Virginia. There are many reasons for Washington being a district, one being that no one state should have the capital in it, and therefore have Congress, the president, and more power than the other states in the USA.
