Is x-ray normal for tooth extraction?

Especially, considering the poor condition of the tooth already, I would have expected that they would take an xray before trying to pull it. A tooth is kind of like an iceberg in the fact that you really don’t know what’s under the surface. Sometimes, you can have extra roots or they can be flared out wider than the tooth or, like in your case, hooked. An xray would have shown exactly what to expect and they could have adjusted their procedures and/or instruments accordingly or even referred you to an oral surgeon if it looked too complicated.
