Isn an attorney much more expensive than a non-lawyer document preparer?
In most cases, no. Most attorneys provide reasonable flat fees for less complex and uncontested cases which are often comparable to, or in some cases even less than, the fees charged by a non-lawyer document preparer. In addition, for those flat fees, the attorney will sign and be accountable to you and the court for the validity of those papers. The attorney will also go to court with you and make the legal argument on your behalf. The attorney will also work with you to prepare you for the hearing or trial, so that you will know what will happen, what you will be asked, what you will need to know to be able to testify competently.
