The truth is that all over the world when the reefs weather and disintegrate, the coral sand (or coral calcium) is washed out into the ocean by wave action. In Okinawa this coral sand is carried by the ocean currents about 4 miles out to sea where it gets deposited in deep channels. It is carefully vacuumed up and any potential losses are carried further out to sea, away from the reefs by the ocean currents. Harvesting the coral is both supervised and endorsed by the Japanese Government. Since the reefs are treasured by the Japanese Government no harvesting is done directly on the reefs themselves.
