Dolby AC-3, more commonly known as Dolby Digital, is the latest generation of surround-sound encoding from Dolby Laboratories. While Dolby Pro Logic was an analog encoding scheme, Dolby Digital uses digital encoding to produce five discrete full-range channels of surround information plus a bandwidth-limited subwoofer channel. DIRECTV currently broadcasts many pay per view movies and other events with Dolby Digital formatted audio for those customers who have a special Dolby Digital audio receiver.  more
