Ive heard of something called musculoskeletal disorders MSDs – what are they?
Musculoskeletal disorders are the most common occupational illness in the UK, affecting over a million people a year. MSDs occur in a variety of ways and can lead to a range of health problems such as low-back pain, joint injuries and repetitive strain injuries (RSI) to the back and limbs. MSDs are caused by a bad workplace environment or are developed from poor working practices or conditions that develop over time – they’re not the same as workplace hazards or risk. But nearly all the problems associated with MSDs or RSI can be prevented or reduced by following health and safety regulations and adhering to good practice. Why is this a trade union issue? MSDs and RSI not only cause personal suffering and loss of income or mobility, but they also cost employers and the NHS. MSDs can occur in most workplaces, but are found particularly in health, education and catering.
