In general, the J-1 application process is easier, faster and less expensive than the H-1B process. Also because H-1B visas are selected by a lottery and the number is capped, many petitions are not granted. The cost of a J-1 visa ranges from $800-$2000 compared to the H-1B application, which can range from $5000-$6000 with required lawyers fees and in most cases H-1B applicants the lawyer fees are non-refundable if the petition is not granted.
