Benzoin powder is not an effective preservative. Fruit or vegetables that will mold on your counter will also mold in the melt and pour, over time. Unfortunately, adding benzoin powder will not effectively retard this process. It may slow it, but it will not stop it. If you feel the need to use fresh fruits in your soap, putting a ‘Use By’ date (similar to the concept of a deli) should help to solve the problem of rancidity or molding. Other companies have done ‘Fresh Fruit’ lines successfully by using this technique.
