I am a medical billing business owner, mentor, educator and I can tell you from sheer experience that you should go with Medical Coding over the other two. Simply put, this industry is wide open, has been wide open to those that are qualified and will remain wide open 20 years from now. As long as someone goes to see a doctor regardless of where they are (even abroad) there is always the need for a qualified medical coder. If my student has no prior healthcare experience I have them take medical billing courses first, move on to coding next and then have them sit for the National Certification Exam given by AHIMA or the AAPC. Then I stress them to take that education even further and get them credentialed in other parts of coding and billing such as; HIPAA, Healthcare Consulting, Workman’s Compensation, Information and Security, etc. just to make sure that they will be very well compensated for their knowledge and expertise when they hit the real world.
