My doctor has talked about a nonstress test; what is this?

The nonstress test is used to determine the well being of the baby. Your doctor will be looking for an acceleration or variation in the heart rate when your baby moves. In order to perform the test an electronic fetal monitor (EFM) will be used to record the baby’s heart rate while you make a note of when your baby moves. Your doctor will want to perform this test weekly or twice weekly anytime after the 30th week. It will take place either in your doctor’s office or in the hospital and lasts about 45 minutes.
