Yes it was odd; no it was not “normal” at any time, with the possible exception of when an uncle married his niece, etc. I can’t believe you have great-grandparents who married in the 1930s! My sister is older than that. That is what you should ask about: is it normal to have children at such young ages, for a generation to be so short. My great-grandparents were born more than a century before yours… You might want to check out the laws in Ohio in the 1930s. In most States (not just the south) it was illegal to marry someone of another race. O.K. to marry a first cousin, or your niece, but illegal for interracial marriages. Go figure. I might add that in all of my tree, there is not one single case of 33 years age disparity.

It was very normal back than for men to marry younger women. My great grandpa was 34 when he married a 18 year old bride. I would guess that the marriage was arranged like many were back than.
