WinAMP, from versions 1.92 to 2.09x, have a plugin that utilises your Microsoft Direct Sound (Direct X). The plugin is called Nullsoft DirectSound Plugin v0.80b (x86) [Out_DS.DLL] and is accessed through WinAMP/Options/Preferences/Audio IO/Output Plug-ins. Change the Output Plugin to Nullsoft WaveOut Plugin v1.1 (x86) [OUT_WAVE.DLL]. This will use the WAVE output device from your Sound Card, And you will notice an immediate increase of output quality. Direct Sound is primarily used for games like Quake 2 and half-Life that use 3d-Surround Sound. You don’t need to use it to play back WAV or MP3 files. As of this time, I know of no MP3 encoder that encodes Surround Sound. When and if this happens, then you can use the Direct Sound Plugin to hear the song in Surround Sound.
