My Year 8 student has had the chickenpox disease and / or has had a course of Hepatitis B vaccinations in the past. Should I consent to the vaccinations offered at school in 2009?
No. If you are sure that your student has had the chickenpox disease, Queensland Health advises that the varicella (chickenpox) vaccine should not be administered, as those who have contracted the disease are considered to be immune. Similarly, any Year 8 student who has previously had a course of Hepatitis B vaccine is not eligible for the vaccine, as this is not a booster program. The school Hepatitis B program is only for those who have no previous history of Hepatitis B vaccination. If you wish to find out more information, such as whether or not immunity has been conferred by disease occurrence or previous vaccinations, please consult your GP or Queensland Health on (07) 5509 7222.
