Occupational therapists are allied health professionals who are trained to assist clients to overcome physical, psychological, emotional and cognitive limitations. They aim to move a person to maximum independence and quality of life. Like music therapists, their work takes an holistic approach and involves assessing client’s needs, consulting with other professionals, and devising appropriate treatment plans. Like music therapists, their training is also tertiary based. The main difference between occupational therapy and music therapy is the ‘tool’. RMTs are highly trained musicians, and utilise music-centred interventions to achieve the therapeutic objectives. This can lead to certain advantages during treatment. Music is inherently engaging and highly motivating. Music can be a non-verbal form of communication. Music is widely represented in the brain, thus stimulating a wide range of responses in the body. Assessment and treatment can both be enhanced by these unique aspects of mu
