On a great weekend for college football fans, which team has the best celebrity fan?
No question it’s Cal superfan Adam Duritz, lead singer of the Counting Crows. The Berkeley grad has been at the practices every day this week and will be on the sideline Saturday. Duritz, a superfan even during Cal’s down years, plans his tour dates around the Bears schedule. Your average rock star doesn’t quote Director’s Cup standings, but Duritz does. He knows the Bears finished ninth the last two years in the competition that measures success for all sports. He isn’t a big-timer, either. He goes to women’s volleyball games or soccer games or whatever Bears team is playing when he’s in town. Of course, with Saturday’s game in Los Angeles, there will be plenty of bandwagon jumpers at the Coliseum simply to be seen, perhaps including Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Several Hollywood types are expected on the Trojans sideline. But Duritz certainly wins in the music category. A few Backstreet Boys requested Trojans sideline passes.
