A select spruce top is composed of layers of spruce wood which are glued together to form the soundboard of your guitar. The guitar produces very fine tones but retains this sound quality throughout the life of the guitar. A solid top is composed of one piece of wood for the soundboard which produces great tones from the moment of purchase. The big benefit of the solid top becomes apparent as the wood ages. The wood actually reacts to your playing style and compliments your type of musical talent. Certainly either type of top will be a good choice, but as with any type of purchase, it comes to personal preference.
