On tachographs, when you are stuck in traffic and not moving, does it count as driving time?

Every time you move the vehicle driving time is recorded. The effects are magnified on vehicles fitted with a digital tachograph which still records for up to 2 minutes once stopped – it soon builds up! If you are not physically moving then it is classed as ‘other work’ or waiting time – the ‘crossed hammers’ on the mode selector. If the hold up is caused by an accident & you do not know how long you are going to be stationary you can use the time as POA – because you are still ‘available for work’ – the hold up is not your fault. As long as you have not been driving for almost 4.5 hours you will be ok regarding the break. BUT if you have not had a break – happens all the time – & are approaching 6 hours DUTY time you need to take a 30 minute break asap. A lot of drivers – myself included, put in on break for at least 15 minutes if we find out that the hold up is caused by an rta.
