Open Question: Car brakes are failing. Brake fluid?

About two weeks ago i noticed my brakes weren’t as responsive as normal. Eventually i noticed my car started to skid slightly. Now with the bad weather it’s become a lot worse, so much so that if there is any ice AT ALL on the road then the car will skid to a stop, even at low speeds. I literally approach a junction and apply the brakes about 10 metres before, and only then it brakes but it’s better described as a skid with the wheels locking, but my car doesn’t have an ABS. It wasn’t too bad before the ice started to set it. It wasn’t great but now the car is undriveable. And don’t worry i am not still driving the car around; i am not an idiot. I took the car to a local garage and they gave it a once over and identified the problem, which they said was because my car was seriously low on brake fluid. I only bought the car 5 months ago from a used car dealers, so i assumed that my braking fluids would be fine. I went out and purchased brake fluid, put it in the car and took it for a te
