Other than types of discs are there any other differences between the HD-DVD and Blu-ray specifications (i.e. colour gamete, compression types available)?

Video codecs are the same, BD copied HD DVD. Audio codec are basically the same however many are mandatory in HD DVD players and optional in BD players. So you may well end up with a codec on the disc but your player can’t support this. In fact the BD player released so far is very poorly speced in this respect. Later players I am sure will be better, the ‘launch’ HD DVD players have been exceptional in this respect.
