I haven’t tried either of these ideas yet (back to school next week!) but the companion to clocks mentioned a number of times was the map of the country with cities and lines to sign on. Couldn’t you just choose a number of cities that went with the number in your class and then you would only have one “spare” person for an absent partner or a threesome.
