This is a common question I hear from therapists all the time who are starting to consider setting up their own private practice. First off, while books can be helpful, I strongly encourage that you begin speaking with other professionals who have established their own practices. Notice how I said, “professionals.” You definitely want to speak with therapists, but you also want to speak with people who are not therapists. Private practice is not exclusive to psychologists, social workers, and mental health counselors. For this reason, it is critical that you speak with professionals in other fields to find out what steps they take and utilize to be successful. Not only should you speak with established professionals, but you want to find someone whose success mirrors what you hope to create.
