Dick ANSWER: S16 ENgine Rebuild Dick – I have tried sleeves in exhaust guides with poor results. I believe the higher-than-normal temperatures that the exhaust guide is subjected to in the Franklin sidedraft engine is the cause. I have not had sleeves shift, but experienced continued sticking of the stem to the sleeve at the bottom of the guide. I tired relieving the bottom of the sleeve 5/8″, or more, as the factory did, but still had sticking problems. After experiencing sticking, the sleeves were again reamed & honed for a bit more clearance – up to 0.004″. This solved the problem in all but one guide. My conclusion was that sleeves are not a good idea in the Sidedraft engine. These problems led us to design a new guide that would eliminate sticking problems and offer excellent wear properties. By using several modified guides from the aircraft industry, it was decided that silicon aluminum bronze was perhaps the best possible guide material. We then chose a specific alloy that is u
