If you are bleeding heavily – like a period – at any point during your pregnancy you will need to call us the first time it happens (473-2021) or go to the emergency room. Blood that runs down your leg and pools by your ankle is generally not okay. However, women commonly have spotting either in their underwear or on toilet tissue when wiping. This is not an emergency. Usually, it is related to having intercourse some time within the past 24 hours, early implantation, silent dilation of the cervix or an unknown but similarly harmless cause. The spotting usually resolves in 1-2 days, but may recur again. You can discuss this with your provider at a routine visit. I am cramping really badly. How do I know if I need to go to the hospital?
