Should a good photographer be able to produce good work even with basic tools or “overcome the medium” ?

Yes is the primary answer. Its the “seeing eye” that is the key to good photography. You don’t need to overcome the medium, but should work within its limits and, where necessary, push things to those limits. If you look at the work of some of the early giants of this genre, you will see very high quality pictures which were captured on cameras which are primitive by today’s standards. So go to it – be inspired! Don’t let the equipment get in the way. Equally well, don’t expect to produce a work of art every time you press the shutter – you will have many more failures than successes.

I have to say, well done! Yeh I’d agree that a good photographer should be able to ‘adapt’ and use the most of what he had. So I haven’t taken it as far by going so basic, however I’m an engineer by qualification, and have a tinkering nature, if I don’t have something I’ll try making one first or at least improvising. Aluminium tape and cardboard makes a wonderful snoot, and masking tape is really good at softening an onboard flash when I don’t have a flashgun or am using a compact. I always keep my old Quality Street Wrappers because they can make interesting filters. And this shot was taken using a my gran’s magnifying glass, which is probably older than me! http://www.flickr.com/photos/ciao_chao/3… All the best – the artful bodger.
