It is not mandated by law but is considered a better practice. The APA Ethical Principles and Code of Conduct indicate that psychologists should make reasonable efforts for facilitating services in the event that services are interrupted by the psychologist's relocation or retirement. Prior to termination, psychologists should provide pretermination counseling and suggest alternative service providers as appropriate.
