This was a good article. Kids who vest so much importance in what you wear will not change if you make school uniforms mandatory; they’ll just move the playing field to wherever the kids are hanging out after school. The solution lies with parents, not with kids. Parents have to teach their kids how ephemeral and ultimately unimportant these fashion-and-logo games are. They have to tell the kids, and they have to look at their own choices pretty hard too, to make sure the kids aren’t soaking up the wrong lessons by watching their folks do a designer-crazed dance of their own, with clothes and cars and furniture, with the latest electronic gadgets and having to own the trendiest “home entertainment system,” the latest word in cooktops and the biggest wine cellar in the neighborhood. When kids see this, who can blame them for getting the idea that price, chic and the right brand name are important? I admit that I would love to have a “uniform” I could wear in my own daily life, but that’
