Should chronically ill prisoners be released?
In my opinion, no. If you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime. Isn’t allowing otherwise basically giving the chronically ill carte blanche to do whatever they want, free of consequences? Noting that you said ‘chronically’ ill, not ‘terminally ill’. There’s a significant difference in the two terms. If a person is going to do something illegal, they should plan on getting caught, not -not- getting caught. That’s the whole ever loving point of the system to deter people from committing crime. They should consider themselves lucky that we don’t just do like we used to – hang them, cut body parts off, etc. Prison time is the humane punishment. If not, what -is- appropriate punishment for these people? I’m also not saying they shouldn’t receive treatment – I feel they should. But that can be done while incarcerated, or should be able to be done while incarcerated.
