Several hundred of them were, and spent time in prison along with hundreds who were not in the IRA. At that time there was internment. People were just picked up off the street and flung in jail without charge and that was what the soldiers were supposed to do that day. One thing for sure is that the actions of the troops that day, caused so much distrust and ultimately prolonged the ‘troubles’. So in fact their action that day caused the deaths of many more; Catholics, Protestants, Irish men and women, British men and women, and of course their fellow soldiers.
