Should gold fish be taken care of the same way as betta fish?
No. Goldfish are a coldwater species so they don’t need a heater as a betta would. They also have different dietary requirements although they will happily swallow most anyhing they can fit in their mouths, whether it’s something “good” for them to eat or not. Goldfish also produce a lot more wastes than a betta, so require much more water volume per fish. Not to mention they’ll grow much larger than a betta. For a goldfish, you should provide at least 10 gallon tank (even when it’s small) and plan to provide at least 20 gallons for a single goldfish, plus at 10 gallons per additional fish, by the time they’re adults. This is one species which is an excellent example of why the “1 inch per galllon rule” doesn’t work.
