The Betta, is actually a species called The Siamese Fighting fish which is sold under the name of Betta in America due to the latin name of Betta Splendens. If you want to breed them then forget any ideas of keeping a pair in a betta bowl which I hear are common over there (and cruel) as it won’t work. They are a good fish to breed once you have bred livebearers as they are not as challenging as some of the more common species like barbs or tetras. You do need to plan ahead as the babies are hard to find homes for and keeping them all yourself is not a likely scenario. You need a mature male, one of a decent size, colour and with slightly tatty fins. The reason for damaged fins means he is more mature and is less likely to whimp out when placed with a female. Don’t use any old male whos pretty because they don’t breed true in colour and the male carries the dominant colour genes when mated to the female.
