Should I use the imperfect subjunctive in this spanish sentence?
Your attempt is quite well. Anyway, there is a few details to discuss. Although in english the first part of the sentence is in simple present, in spanish you can’t use that tense when you are making and hypothesis, like in this case. The problem is that this is not always very easy and clear to determine, that’s way so many people use it incorrectly, especially when they speak. Then the correct form would be to use the imperfect subjunctive. Regarding the other verbs in the sentence, according to spanish grammar rules, when the verb of which the subjunctive depends is in simple past, imperfect past (I don’t really know how is the translation of this tense), past perfect or conditional (this latter is the case here-“sería”-), you should use the imperfect subjunctive.
