As an American, I have read books in both American and British English. Books written in British English such as The Children of Men by PD James did contain some words that I didn't understand but it wasn't difficult to figure out their meanings through context clues. But I have watched British films where they used so much British slang that I couldn't understand what was being said. Write in which ever vocabulary you are most familiar and comfortable with but be mindful of your audience. Too much British slang or British English words may turn away an American audience. I think a balance between both will be the best way to approach your book. The British English allows you too feel comfortable in your writing & the American English will widen your target audience. Perhaps you can hire an American English editor who can help you point out BE phrases or words that wouldn't resonate well with an AE audience.  more
