Should National Galleries Be Allowed to Sell Works? Friday January 6, 2006If a national gallery or museum is in need of money, or has run out of storage space, should selling items in its collection be an option? Or does this contradict the whole point of the gallery’s existence? Rupert Christiansen, writing in the Arts Telegraph, says we must “remember that one man’s junk box is another man’s treasure trove, and that what appears worthless in 2006 may well prove significant to our grandchildren.” Selling off something to solve a problem today, could create others later on.
