Should public dietary guidelines reflect leaner economic times?
Some health policy experts feel the government’s dietary recommendations need to get with the times. Instead of emphasizing the most nutrient-rich foods, which can be expensive and hard to find in lower-income neighborhoods, public guidelines should highlight the most affordable nutritious foods, says Adam Drewnowski, PhD, obesity expert and director of the University of Washington Center for Public Health Nutrition. His suggested tweaks would put potatoes, frozen vegetables, low-fat milk and eggs high on the list of recommended buys.
