Some health policy experts feel the government’s dietary recommendations need to get with the times. Instead of emphasizing the most nutrient-rich foods, which can be expensive and hard to find in lower-income neighborhoods, public guidelines should highlight the most affordable nutritious foods, says Adam Drewnowski, PhD, obesity expert and director of the University of Washington Center for Public Health Nutrition.
