Should slang spelling be accepted as a viable form of communication?

The English language has been bastardized enough without all the crap spelling becoming acceptable. This is another step towards newspeak where people cannot communicate because they have become out of touch with the new language. If the idiots and children of idiots cannot spell properly to communicate, then they should be educated how to do so. People may well wake up one morning like the character in Franz Kafka’s novel not understanding what is being said or being able to communicate his thoughts to others. Some people will say that not allowing kids to do this will stifle their creativity. I say B.S. If you want to raise a generation of fools and idiots then this is the correct way to go down that road. When they grow up and try to make it in the real world, they will have problems. Being able to communicate in a common language everyone can understand is key to getting along in a society. When people become linguistically isolated in the wider society or community, problems arise

I do not think that slang spelling should be accepted as a viable form of communication. Create a new language but do not alter the English Language. If a person doesn’t make the effort to know how to spell correctly that is a reflection on themselves. To add more slang complicates the education system. If it means Johnny can spell hello, as hl or helo, then how can a teacher teach them if any type of mistake is allowed? Don’t make them more illiterate than they are. It’s difficult enough to teach without having the very foundations of what we teach about the English language undermined. If a top academic student isn’t making the effort to speak/write a language that has existed for generations, then I question whether or not they’re really a stop student.

No I do not believe slang spelling should be accepted as a viable form of communication. It’s so sad to see the English language so hacked to death already, I regularly notice in news articles and sometimes even in the novels I read where spelling is incorrect, not to mention incorrect grammar, what was the “editor” doing? For heavens sake we have spell check and it can’t even be done correctly in our current public literature we read daily….I am in my mid thirties and I have already noticed the decline of our language in the last 20 years since I finished school. ( and I was a “B” student for English, but had the best English teacher ever, that made me appreciate our language and respect it.” I’m Chinese Canadian and fortunately for me I did not need “ESL” as a child in school, and I can say for sure that China is not going to accept slang to replace each complex character for Chinese words, so why should we allow our English language be disrespected and replaced by gibberish…. If

You arts majors… if you think that spelling a word correctly makes a person intelligent or if you can ‘hate’ someone who has bad grammar or spelling you are truly ridiculous. Language is made to communicate with one another, if you can’t accept others for who they are or if you judge them by how they talk you need to get around. English has many variations and how people converse is different even from the Southern states to Mid-Western states to Canada. If you focused on receiving the message more rather than the delivery, you would see that it was you who was truly the ignorant one. As for adding them to the dictionary, if you need to look-up misspelled words you must be an arts student.

Grammar and spelling isn’t about respect of the English language, it’s about respecting one another, by meeting a communication standard. For example, when your paper has fewer grammatical and spelling errors, the professor can focus on your idea, your argument, and your research. It’s hard to think of reading and writing beyond earning grades in high school. We learn our abc’s to read and spell; we learn grammar to write sentences; we learn topic sentences to construct paragraphs; we learn how to write essays. But the purpose of your writing assignments in high school is to prepare you for your thinking assignments in university, where you are trained to analyze, critique, and make arguments. Don’t let your thesis be constrained or ignored by a frustrated prof because of poor grammar. You owe it to yourself and others to communicate your thoughts in the best way possible.
