Should the San Diego Chargers fire head coach Marty Schottenheimer?

G’day Perryman, Thank you for your question. The Chargers had a pretty good season but lost the Divisional Playoffs against the Patriots who have more playoff experience. They had more players at the Probowl with 9 than any other team. I would keep him unless you were fairly certain that it was his failings that held them back. Given the record this year, I don’t think that you can argue that. The team should learn from its experiences and be determined to go all the way next season. In my view, teams that stick with good coaches tend to have a better record than teams who continually chop and change. This has a disconcerting affect on the players. If the coach is no good then he should be sacked but not otherwise. In short, the Chargers should keep Marty.

If the Chargers do fire Marty, we will welcome him back with open arms in Cleveland!!!!!!

I think Marty has done enough to make them a winning team that he deserves to be there. He has some issues when it comes to the playoffs, but the Chargers had a hard time even getting to the playoffs before him. I think he needs work on his playoff game plans though. The off the cuff things that work during the season, often backfire in the playoffs. The team as a whole last week did leave some points on the field though. I think they are too good of a team to have let the game be that close.

I say no, but if an owner is butting heads with the head coach, it’s always trouble.

If you fire a coach who goes 14-2 in a season then you’ll end up firing everybody. Just because he didn’t win the Superbowl doesn’t mean he should get the sack – 30 of the other 31 head coaches aren’t going to win it either.
